Tonight Villanova enters a Tournament number two seed with a 34-5 records. UNC enters as a number one seed with a 33-6 record. The regular season ended with AP Top 25 College Basketball rankings putting UNC at third, up from fourth, and Villanova at sixth, down from third.
Since January, Villanova has lost only three games. They fell to number sixteen Providence late in the season 82-76 in overtime. Then in February they fell to Xavier 90-83. During Tournament week, Villanova suffered that upset to unranked Seton Hall. But final score was 69-67 in that Big East Championship game. Villanova, however, was down 11 points at halftime. What was Villanova’s reaction in that game? Villanova coach Jay Wright told ESPN afterwards “We just got beat by a team that played better than us tonight. They played a great first half. We played a great second half, and then down the stretch, they made the plays and we didn’t. Some of the reasons we didn’t is because they made some great defensive plays.”
In fact, Villanova released they lost that game by losing control of the first half. Arcidiacono told ESPN afterwards “We definitely dug ourselves in the hole in the first half. They played really well. We didn’t execute our game plan. You have to give them credit for the way they played. We grinded. We had a shot to win. We were up two.
